Thank you! I am running parallels with Mac and Vista. Sometimes when I forget and try to open a .docx file directly from my email or from the web, the system has to boot up again in Vista. It takes a lot of time. Does this solution work with opening docx files from email/web directly?

I installed the XML converter. It says it is installed. I see it's icon on my desktop as well as on my hard drive. However, when I click on the icon it opens up the same installing system again.

Is there something I am missing?

I so very much appreciate all the wonderful and very useful information! You guys are fantastic! Strangers from the internet just helped me immensely and made my day! I plan on making it my mission for the day to pass on the kindness and find an act of service to another unknown by-standard!

Hi Rosey,

The converter only allows standard .docx files without a password. I would contact the original sender and ask him/her to save the document as a .doc file rather than .docx. I know it's a hassle...

There is also the possibility to download MS Office 2008 for the Mac as a trial version: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/Office2008/trial-download.mspx

I downloaded the converter, but it can't read the file. I think the problem is that it was a password-protected docx file. Is there anything I can do to open the file? (Yes, I do know the password.) Thanks!

Olivia, the changing to zip solution is not the preferred method as you will loose all styling elements from the original docx file. <a href="http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/5/8/158d6d58-43f8-4334-9d3f-479010fbcad7/OpenXMLConverter100.dmg" rel="nofollow">Download the XML Converter</a> instead. Instructions on how to convert the docx file are included.
