Rock ‘N Roll Half Marathon (rnrsj W1D1)

This is the first post in a series of training runs/logs for my upcoming half Marathon race in San Jose on October 4. As you might know I started running last year with the C25K program. I never ran in my life and here we are today, my first training session for a half Marathon. I never thought I would be running this distance but due to some rigorous changes in my life I’m actually doing it!

I’m going to be short about today’s training run. Nothing too exciting, a regular 6.5Km run. Any run between 5 and 10K I consider an easy run these days. What a difference a year ago, 5K would be my ultimate run… The only difference today with my regular runs was that I ran during the evening hours. Normally I’m running in the mornings (06:30 – 07:00) but with the rising temperatures here in California I find it easier to run at night these days. It was still low 90′s (32 Celsius) but the sun was creeping behind the hills. Perfect conditions…

Let’s talk about the race! I signed up for the Rock ‘N Roll half Marathon in San Jose. The Rock and Roll events are characterized by live music along the route. 20 live bands will entertain the runners during their half Marathon. These Marathons are nationwide with cities like San Jose, Virginia Beach, Seattle and Chicago to name a few. All the same concept, half a Marathon with music.

The San Jose course is known as ‘fast and flat’, a great opportunity to set a new PR. Since this will be my first race ever I don’t have to worry about a PR. Any time will be my PR! I do have a certain time in my head but I’m trying not to focus on it too much. I’m just gonna have fun my first race.

Feel free to follow my journey to my first Half Marathon. All posts related to this will be in the category RNRSJ (Rock ‘N Roll San Jose) or subscribe to my RSS feed to receive all of my updates. If you rather receive updates by email please fill out the box to your right !

Again, this was a ‘short’ introduction to my training runs. My next posts will reveal my actual traing schedule, running times and much more!

    Michael Jackson (1958 – 2009)

I grew up with the music of Michael Jackson. Didn’t we all? When he earned his title ‘King of Pop’ back in the ’80′s I was captivated by the person of Michael Jackson. I remember watching the countdown of his music video ‘Thriller’. It was announced all week and we all huddled up in front of the television to see what this much anticipated video was all about. It didn’t disappoint me. The next day I bought (then still only available in vinyl) his album. I played it day in, day out… Billy Jean, Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, Human Nature…

A few days ago while reading about the death of Farah Fawcett (another icon) my twitter stream report that Michael Jackson has been taken to the hospital with a cardiac arrest. A few minutes later TMZ reports the King of Pop has died. From there I was surfing from CNN to LA Times, TMZ, Facebook, Twitter and every possible social media type you can think of… Like many others the internet came almost to a complete halt due to a spike in traffic.

So here we are. I’m playing MJ songs all weekend long. Loaded my iPod with his songs just to listen to the many, many memorable songs he has written. The following quote was found on reddit and it reflects what I think the majority of people can identify with. The original quote unfortunately is lost. If you know who wrote this please lemme know so I can quote this properly:

Michael Jackson was a tragically sad individual. Say what you want, the man was severely abused as a child, and went on to retreat completely into his fantasy world, where he’d never have to grow up or face what happened to him. His wealth allowed him to surround himself with yes-people who never questioned him, and never encouraged him to seek help. He alienated the people who truly cared about him, because they reminded him of his hurtful, negative past.

The real tragedy came when he went on to perpetuate the cycle of abuse with other children, whom he did truly, truly love … but not in an age-appropriate manner. He really saw himself as a child, and wanted so desperately to be one again, that he fell in love with everything about young children.

I’m not defending pedophilia, I find what he did to be wrong and not at all appropriate … but the only thing I can find myself feeling about his whole situation is sadness.

He was an extraordinarily talented individual, and it’s sad that all of the allegations and atrocities that came out of the 90′s will eclipse all of that. He gave us some industry-changing music, some of the best pop-music of all time. This whole situation is just really, really awful.

Right after the death of Michael Jackson spontaneous dance parties and flashmobs were held throughout the world. I collected some pictures of how people are celebrating the live of Michael Jackson.

    From TMZ at 14:20 PST

We’ve just learned Michael Jackson has died. He was 50. Michael suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this afternoon at his Holmby Hills home and paramedics were unable to revive him. We’re told when paramedics arrived Jackson had no pulse and they never got a pulse back. A source tells us Jackson was dead when paramedics arrived. A cardiologist at UCLA tells TMZ Jackson died of cardiac arrest. Once at the hospital, the staff tried to resuscitate him but he was completely unresponsive. A source inside the hospital told us there was “absolute chaos” after Jackson arrived. People who were with the singer were screaming, “You’ve got to save him! You’ve got to save him!” We’re told one of the staff members at Jackson’s home called 911.

Michael is survived by three children: Michael Joseph Jackson, Jr., Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince “Blanket” Michael Jackson II.

Last but not least: Michael waving goodbye to his fans.

    Birthday weekend at Big Sur

We just got back from my pre-birthday weekend at Big Sur. My actual b-day is today (yay me!) but due to a time schedule we decided to leave for the Big Sur area on Thursday. It was an amazing trip and the Big Sur/Monterey area is simply breath-taking. We stayed at the Deer Haven Inn in Pacific Grove, a small town which is part of the Monterey/Carmel area.

We traveled down South exploring Big Sur and it’s dramatic ocean views. The views are truly amazing. We had lunch at the Post Ranch Inn, an upscale restaurant with a stunning view over the ocean. Of course we did the 17 mile drive through the Pebble Beach district. Below a few pics of our trip. More to come soon as I’m going through all th pictures. Click the images to enlarge!

Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.0

A lot of Mac users are still struggling with MS docx files. My previous post, a quick and dirty solution on how to open .docx files on your mac, is driving 40% of my current traffic. Time to give you an update! MS released the Open XML File Format Converter (no longer beta) on july 3rd. Since the download page is kinda hidden on the MS Mac website I decided to place the links in this post. Enjoy…

Open XML Converter allows you to convert Open XML files that were created in Office 2008 for Mac or Office 2007 for Windows so that you can open, edit, and save them in earlier versions of Office for Mac. Open XML Converter can convert Word documents, Excel workbooks, and PowerPoint presentations that are in the Open XML Format so that you can open and edit the files in Office 2004 for Mac and Office v. X for Mac. You can choose to convert and open one file, or convert a large number of files.
