How to get started with running
If you've done a lot of walking, but you've never run before, you might feel a bit intimidated to get out there and start. DON'T BE! It doesn't matter how you look or how fast you go. The only thing matters is that you are actually moving. It's normal to feel concious when running on a track or a trail with other people around you. Let me tell you this. Every runner has gone through this phase. Veteran runners will actually appriciate seeing another individual picking up running. Don't get intimidated by the fast runners. Pretty soon you will be one of them!
A few basic tips:
- Get medical clearance from your doctor before you get started.
- Get fitted for the right running shoes for your feet and running style.
- Before you start your workouts, make sure you warm up properly by walking for 5-10 minutes. You should always end your workout with a cooldown.
Some general things to consider:
- Pick a route that fits your fitness level. Loads of hills will be very difficult for a beginner. Save them for when you’re training for your first marathon!
- Have achievable goals. Track your progress and write it down so you can see how far you’ve come. Progress is more than weight or inches lost. It’s the ability to go further and feel better. It's easy to get impatient, and you may feel tempted to skip ahead in the C25K program, but hold yourself back. Don't try to do more, even if you feel you can. If, on the other hand, you find the program too strenuous, just stretch it out. Don't feel pressured to continue faster than you're able. Repeat weeks if needed and move ahead only when you feel you're ready.
- Have fun! Whether you go with a partner or this is much-needed alone time, enjoy yourself and have fun. You will be more inclined to continue if you are having a great time.
